The Counselling Process
The process
Initial Consultation
Our first meeting, the Initial Consultation, lasts 90 minutes and is a gentle opportunity for us to get to know one another and explore whether working together feels like the right fit. It also gives me the chance to listen carefully to your concerns and gain a fuller picture of your situation, so that I can recommend the most appropriate path forward. From there, we can begin scheduling your Counselling Sessions.
Counselling session
Each Counselling Session lasts approximately 60 minutes, though this may vary depending on what we set out to achieve together. Sessions are shaped entirely around your individual needs and may involve conversation, reflection, drawing, and a variety of therapeutic exercises. Where Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the chosen approach, you may be given homework to complete between sessions and bring back for discussion. In some cases, I may also recommend EMDR as the most effective path forward.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that explores the powerful connection between the way we think, the way we feel, and the way we behave. It is regarded as one of the most effective treatments for a wide range of mental health concerns, though it requires active participation and commitment. As part of the process, you will be provided with a folder containing information sheets, homework assignments, and supporting worksheets.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialised psychotherapeutic approach designed to help process distressing or traumatic memories. During an EMDR session, you will be gently guided to recall a painful memory while simultaneously directing your attention to an external stimulus — such as following my finger as it moves from side to side across your field of vision, or focusing on sounds or tapping sensations that alternate rhythmically from left to right.
